Kansas City Has an Amazing Beer Community

It’s not under the best circumstance that more than 100 people will be attending the Friends-giving Bottle Share with Dan the Beer Man on Sunday, November 22, but it shows how the beer community in Kansas City is a pretty amazing community that will go out of their way to support a fellow beer lover.  I won’t go into too much detail other than to say a truly kind and thoughtful person lost someone they cared about.

Ten dozen or so people will be at Screenland Armour bringing a lots of treats including rare beers to raffle, auction, and share; gift cards, beer lights, and other beer related items to raffle and auction; and main dishes and side dishes to enjoy.  There’s a recommended donation of $10 and for every $10 you get a raffle ticket, but no donation is necessary to attend.  They ask that you bring at least one bottle of beer and/or an appetizer to share.  See more on the event on the Facebook event page here.

Aside from the bottle share event above, internet forums like craftbeerkc.com, reddit.com/r/KansasCityBeer, and the various Facebook groups are very active and helpful for all different types.  Need a Love Child No. 3?  You’re likely to find someone willing to trade.  Need to know if an event is good enough to attend?  Ask someone and they can give you an in depth review from experience or you may even get the event coordinator help you out.  If you don’t want to be a part of the community in the real world, our online presence is just as amazing.

If you do want to be a part of the community in the real world and have never attended an event, I can tell you that the beer community is easy to talk to and very welcoming.  With the excitement and growth of the Kansas City beer community, more people become interested in the beer scene here.  Whether you’ve just turned 21 or are just now discovering how amazing beer is, Kansas City is the best place to do it.

  • 1:30pm-6pm – KC Beer Fest, Power & Light District, Kansas City, MO, $35 GA, $60 VIP.  This fest has been around for a while, so they’ve got it pretty well organized.  Over 200 craft beers from around the world, rare keg tappings, live music, and food trucks will be spread across two blocks in downtown Kansas City.

Saturday, October 24

  • 1:30pm-5pm – Beerfest at the Ballpark, 1800 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, KS, $36.  I’ll be honest, you should skip this one.  The venue is great, but the beers and crowd were less than stellar, especially for the price.  If you really want to go, they do have over 200 domestic, microbrewed, and international craft beers while a DJ will be playing.

Screenland Armour Arts & Crafts Beer Festival

Screenland’s Crossroads location may get more attention lately, but the Armour location has an ace up its sleeve.  Winner of the Best Beer Festival 2014 from The Pitch Weekly, Arts & Crafts Festival is a two day festival that will take place on August 21st and 22nd at Screenland’s North Kansas City location on Armour.  They promise the most rare craft beers, the best live local music, great local artists, film premieres, and more.

Along with being the sponsor of the event, 4 Hands Brewing Company will also host a Short Film Competition in conjunction with Kansas City Film Festival and Screenland Theatres.  The top ten films submitted will be chosen by a panel of experts and will be screened at the festival on August 22.  The winner will be chosen by a live panel during the screening and will get to work with 4 Hands and Screenland to create a unique short film advertising the brewery to be played at Screenland Theatres for no less than six months.  The film must feature craft beer in some way.  If you enjoy film making and beer, this would be a fun project.

I attended last year and it was a more cultured event than typical beer festivals.  I was able to enjoy documentaries, indie films, exclusive and rare beers, local artist and bands, an industry Q & A, and food vendors.  At the start of each day, the space was too small to accommodate the crowd.  Their lobby should only hold about a third of the people who attended, but as events and screening opened up, the lobby opened up quite a bit.  At the actual beer tasting on Saturday the live music was too loud for the space, but the beer was easy to get to.  Some of the servers weren’t very knowledgeable of the beer, but most were actually from the brewery in which they were representing.

A portion of this year’s ticket sales will go to help support KC Pet Project.

Tickets are still available on their website, but will surely sell out as they are limiting it to 300 per day.

2015 Snake Saturday Pictures

If you made it out to Snake Saturday, you may have been most impressed by the perfect weather.  Maybe a little chilly in the morning, but nothing a light jacket couldn’t cure.  Another just as impressive point of the day was the beer scene.  Big Rip, Grain to Glass, Cinder Block, and Screenland Armour were all able to hold their own as they welcomed the thousands of people that visited North Kansas City.  Here are some pictures from the day.

Starting at 8am, Big Rip served up new beers, special cocktails, and a good time.  Snake Saturday merchandise was available to purchase and some items were even free.  Their foosball table was set up to entertain outdoor guests.

Grain to Glass has the perfect location for Snake Saturday – right on 16th & Swift.  I arrived quite early, so they weren’t too busy, yet.  As I left, there was a steady stream of people coming in to check it out and have a beer.

After Grain to Glass, I stopped by Cinder Block.  It was still early, but they had a pretty decent crowd and the live music was enjoyable.

I volunteered to walk the parade as a part of a float for a non-profit, so I was able to get some fun shots of the crowd.

I didn’t go into Screenland Armour, but I was able to get a few shots of the outside.  “Snake Saturday Lives Here” proclaims the marquee.
